Lab Technician, Coatings R&D

Tribochem, located in Porto, Portugal, is one of GGB's technology development centers of excellence, and focuses on polymer coatings for tribological applications. We are a young and dynamic team working on the cutting edge of technology in continuous collaboration the entire GGB R&D team.

Tribochem also supports market penetration efforts through continuous collaboration with management and our GGB sales colleagues, contributing for strategy definition and ensuring alignment.

We are currently looking for a

Lab Technician, Coatings R&D

Responsibilities:

• Plan and execute laboratory tasks for support of R&D activities.
• Execute or coordinate execution of advanced material characterization analyses (such as FTIR, TGA, DSC, XPS, MRI, SEM-EDS, particle size distribution analysis) and make results available to the R&D group.
• Report findings and participate in discussion with development team.
• Quality inspection, storage management and preparation of paints
  • Ensure the received paint batches are conform to the technical datasheets by checking and registering levels of viscosity and solids contents.
  • Collaborate on maintaining the paints stored in adequate conditions with respect to indications on the technical datasheets.
• Prototype coated parts production
  • Perform incoming parts inspection including measurements and manufacturing imperfection verification while documenting and registering the findings
    Execute surface preparation processes on parts to be coated, including pyrolysis and grit blasting.
  • Execute masking of parts when required for the grit blasting and coating application operations.
  • Collaboration on the conceptual design of fixtures used to hold the parts during surface preparation and coating application processes.
  • Execute and record findings on post-coating quality verification procedures, including coating thickness and final part dimensions measurement, adhesion verification and visual inspection for imperfections.
  • Ensure adequate packaging of coated good for transportation in accordance with internal practices and specific customer requirements.
  • While applying coatings on prototype parts from customers, collect all necessary data so that application can be reproduced in coating facilities. Coatings shall be in liquid form and applied via conventional spraying techniques using manual or semi-automatic equipment. 
• Support Job Coater development
  • Elaborate process parameter sheet for instruction of job coaters when applicable.. 

Qualifications:

• Technical course in chemical laboratory or related field.
• Creative problem-solving nature with ‘can do’ attitude.
• Displays a professional and confident mannerism.
• Self-awareness and respect for others that is conducive to team working. Good active listening skills.
• Capable of reading engineering drawings at a basic level.
• Good communication skills (English is a must).
• Openness to give guidance and support, sharing knowledge and learning from others.
• Self-motivated, keen to learn and develop, capable of working autonomously. Takes initiative.

Nice to have (but will be developed if not):

• Understanding of properties of polymers and metals. Show curiosity in knowledge development.
• Capable of reading engineering drawings: good understanding of dimensional & geometric tolerances.
• Coatings application experience in general.
• Polymer coatings application process experience.
• Understanding of properties of polymers and metals. Show curiosity in knowledge development.
