Case Study

Fluid Power

GGB low-friction, self-lubricating bearings offer a complete solution for the fluid power industry.

IMPROVING PERFORMANCE FOR THE FLUID POWER INDUSTRY

A world-leading diversified manufacturer of motion and control technologies and systems was looking for a reliable, durable bearing for their medium-pressure axial piston pump and turned to GGB for a customized solution. The customer, a provider of precision-engineered solutions for mobile, industrial and aerospace markets, required a lower friction bearing material to improve performance and eliminate flow erosion.

The variable displacement axial piston pump operates at medium pressure with continuous operation at pressures up to 4060 PSI (280 bar), offering equipment manufacturers many advantages, such as its compact size, quiet operation, high efficiency at lower power and simple maintenance. To meet the high standard of their product, the customer needed a quality bearing with exceptional durability.

The system required two cradle bearings in order to support the swash plate, the function of which is to generate a variable flow at the outlet port of the axial piston pump. Recognizing that the customer’s greatest need was for a lower friction material, GGB began testing samples, aiming to enhance performance and eliminate flow erosion.

SUPERIOR QUALITY, GREATER ADVANTAGES

After successful testing, GGB’s HI-EX® proved to be the ideal material for the application, offering reduced friction without demonstrating flow erosion in the bearing liner. Specifically developed to operate with marginal lubrication, HI-EX® composite bearings offer many advantages, including:

  • Low wear rate
  • Self-lubricated operation
  • High reliability and longer bearing life
  • Seizure and chemical resistant
  • High static and dynamic load capacity
  • Zero water absorption making them dimensionally stable
  • Compact and light
  • Suitable for rotating, oscillating, reciprocating and sliding movements
  • No machining required after assembly (Except in required cases)
